How to Make a Grungy Looking Poster With Photoshop

Hello everyone. Today I’m gonna show you how to make a rock poster with photoshop.  Throughout this tutorial, you will learn basic blending techniques. We will be using photoshop brushes to add a little flair to our design. Lets get started.

This is what we are going to design

Open up photoshop and create a new document with transparent background. Sizes are not important but i choose 620 x 877.  Basically i divide the size of A4 paper to four. I choose transparent background because i like to control the background when i am starting with a new design.

First start with background layer fill that with color #ba0606. Download this Sand Texture and open it in photoshop. Choose select all and copy  and paste it to your psd. From layers panel choose multiply as blending mode. You can resize texture layer by hitting ctrl + t or from the menu edit -> free transform.

For the stripes at background we will use brushes. Here is a great Risingsun Brushes including the stripes that i used on this poster. Create a new layer top of the background and texture layer, pick white as your color and apply brush. This time you will set blending mode to overlay and opacity to %16.

Finally, create a new layer on top of all and call it gradient. Take gradient tool choose black and white colors and pick up radial gradient. Start from the middle of the page and go all the way up. Set the blending mode for this layer is to overlay and opacity to %35. With this gradient we add color detail to our composition.

Next we will add images to our poster.  Download image 1 and image 2. We will be using the amp on image 1 and the girl on the image 2. But first we need to remove backgrounds. My favorite masking technique is using quick mask. Copy, paste and resize images to position them. Next by using layer mask paint the backgrounds. A little trick for that is use soft brushes on the edges. When you finished right click to your layer masks and select apply layer mask. So far you must have something like this.

Use your favorite grunge font for the top part. I’m using VTKS Distress. We are almost finished. Photoshop brushes are great for finishing touches. You can use your own brushes but i use Spooky Brush Set for birds, Tribal Brushes for the models belly tattoo, Splatter Brushes for splatters.
